With the introduction of 10.9, administrators have the ability to deploy management profiles to Mac’s that set things like password length, Dock applications, and network settings. Deploying packages, creating collections, etc all looks the same whether you have a Mac or PC. Parallels also brings in the Netboot protocol, so Mac’s can be booted over the network in a similar fashion to PXE.Īnother great advantage is that all of the management from SCCM looks exactly like the management for PC’s, so administrators do not have to learn a new system. This will be changing in a future release of Parallels. You cannot layer packages or applications on top of a base image. In its current release, this can only be achieved with thick images. With the plugin, administrators can image Mac’s just like they do PC’s. The second major advantage of using the plugin is operating system deployment.

The plug-in also provides all of the same software inventory and deployment for SCCM. As SCCM administrators know, a PKI environment can be very involved and expensive, and is really only required to manage clients across the Internet. The primary advantage of using the Parallels plugin over native SCCM management is that a PKI environment is not needed. Detailed information, white papers, and contact information can be found here.

They also have another product – an SCCM plugin that allows for Mac management with SCCM. It is the premiere software program for doing this. As mentioned, Parallels Mac Management for ConfigMgr comes with its own client which communicates via a self-signed certificate with the Configuration Manager Proxy with the Management Point.Parallels is known for running Windows in a virtual environment on your Mac.

The client is not the Mac OS X client available from Microsoft. The plugin allows you to manage the features from the Configuration Manager Console mentioned above. Plugin with Configuration Manager console Netboot is used to boot an Apple Mac from the network, the netboot integration allows Mac OS X users to boot from the network via one (or more) of your PXE enabled distribution points. Try to install the Configuration Manager Proxy on the server where an SMS Provider is installed, this saves you manual configuration. The Configuration Manager Proxy needs to be installed in each primary site or when using Secondary Sites you are able to choose if you want to install the Configuration Manager Proxy in the Secondary Site, installation in the Primary Sites are still mandatory. The Configuration Manager Proxy Agent is the middle-tier between the Parallels Configuration Manager client and the Configuration Manager 2012 Management Point.

In the table below you see the main features of the plugin to Configuration Manager. Parallels Mac Management for ConfigMgr adds enhanced Mac OS X support to Configuration Manager 2007 and Configuration Manager 2012. In earlier blogs I wrote ( here, here, here and here) about the native Mac OS X support in Configuration Manager 2012 R2, I have also showed the Parallels integration while being at the ConfigMgr.ch Community Event. In Part 1 we will have a look at the features, the components and how we are able to deploy the client. So for me worthwhile looking at and of course everything that integrates with ConfigMgr 2012 attracts my attention 😉 This blog is a review of Parallels Mac Management, let’s have a look. Parallels Mac Management for SCCM was awarded with the “The Best of TechEd award”. At TechEd North America I came across the booth from Parallels and they were advertising with a product called Parallels Mac Management for ConfigMgr.
